Revolution Produce
Hi there and welcome to Revolution Produce! This page will inform you as to what we are all about and how to source our locally grown produce.
Revolution Produce is a family owned business that grows and supplies fresh pesticide free produce to the surrounding community and local businesses. The greenhouse is located approximately 8km North of Ungarra on the Snodgrass farm, Churinga. Revolution Produce is just a small cog in the mixed cropping and livestock operation underway on the property.
About Revolution Produce
Our beginnings
The idea for this business started in mid-2020. A second hand steel greenhouse frame was procured from Victoria and construction began! The facility was largely constructed by the Snodgrass family members themselves, though with significant assistance from a range of mostly local businesses and some volunteers who wanted to be involved. An estimated construction period of 6 months blew out to 2 years, but by the end of 2022 we were ready to commence growing.
And grow we have.
Our pesticide free produce made through Aquaponics
At Revolution Produce, we pride ourselves on local grown produce that is free from pesticides and has a long shelf life. We do this by utilising a method of growing produce called Aquaponics, combining growing plants in a hydroponic system that is “fertilised” from an integrated aquaculture fish farm. The 2 components work symbiotically, the fish waste produced by the fish is utilised by the plants to grow big and strong which in turn cleans the water for the fish. The system relies on a healthy army of beneficial microbes both in the water and on the plant roots and shoots. All of the water is constantly recirculating throughout the system, which only leaves the system via minimal evaporation or what water is actually contained in the harvested produce (or biomass that gets composted). We get our top up water from the rainwater that is captured from the greenhouse gutters. Since we rely so totally on the fish and microbiology within, we can’t use any insecticides, fungicides or herbicides as they would be harmful to the fish.
What we grow.
Our all year round range of leafy greens includes various gourmet lettuce varieties, kale or mesclun mix, along with a selection of fragrant herbs such as basil, parsley, dill, coriander, rosemary and sage. Seasonal options include snow peas, beans, chillies, cucumbers, tomatoes, capsicums, broccoli and beetroot. We are regularly experimenting with growing new varieties and options, even producing our own basil pesto and chilli sauces occasionally.
How to buy Revolution Produce?
Well, unbeknownst to you, you might already have tried some! Initially we focussed on getting our produce out via local supermarkets, and this progressed into supplying local businesses too, including the Seabreeze Hotel, Seaspell Café and Port Neill Hotel. Plenty of our produce has been served up at the Eyre United clubrooms as well as the Port Neill Bowls Club.
However, our most exciting change of recent times is that we have commenced making Direct to Customer sales, prompted after multiple requests from some locals in the know. With orders placed on Tuesdays, we load up our little refrigerated ute with produce and will deliver to your door on Wednesday afternoons. Every single week.
We’re making progress, but we’ve got plenty more exciting ideas and projects ahead! This includes producing our own fish food on farm, potential for greenhouse tours, and continuous optimisation of our overall process.
Thanks for taking the time to learn about our business, we hope to hear from you soon.
